The Special Education Foundation honored Gene McNary on February 10, 2010, at the Bogey Club in Ladue. Gene’s commitment to children and youth with disabilities has been a hallmark of his career. As St. Louis County Executive, Gene served as chair of the successful 1986 SSD Tax Levy Committee. He joined the board of the Special Education Foundation in 1998 and assumed the role of president in 2003. He continues to serve in that role today. Under his leadership, the Foundation has experienced tremendous growth and expansion — creating a lasting impact on countless children and taking the Foundation from an annual budget of $40,000 to one with more than $400,000 today.

In 2008, the Special Education Foundation honored David Diener for his tireless dedication to the Foundation’s mission. David’s efforts provided the Foundation with its first large grant though a substantial gift from the Dana Brown Foundation. Today, David’s influence continues to be felt annually by countless special education teachers who develop innovative classroom projects. Teachers are awarded Dana Brown Mini-Grants at a reception held each year. The results of their work impact the success of the students they serve.

In 2006, the Foundation honored then Superintendent of Special School District, Peter Kachris, Ph. D., for his life-long commitment to children and youth. During his tenure as superintendent, Dr. Kachris was very supportive of the Foundation’s work. He engaged both the teachers and administrators in supporting the mission of the Foundation and helped the Foundation to strengthen and broaden its base among the local school districts in St. Louis County. His influence continues today.
