Welcome to the Special Education Foundation. We are delighted that you are taking time to review our Web site and to learn about the many services that we provide to children and youth with disabilities in the St. Louis county area. Since its inception in 1984, the Foundation has remained steadfast in its commitment to assist students achieve success in areas not supported by tax dollars.
The past six years have brought steady growth and increased community outreach to the Special Education Foundation. While the past year's economic downturn placed challenges in the Foundation's path, it did not deter its ability to help children and youth succeed in their endeavors beyond the classroom. The year brought additional outreach to foundations and individuals to increase funding for student services and also gave the Foundation the wonderful addition of the Irene Orlando Fund for Children with Autism.
The Foundation's impact on the lives of countless children is reflected in the following 2009 endeavors:
- The Foundation's signature event, the Commitment to Kids Banquet, shows the spirit and determination of children with disabilities and the tireless dedication of their teachers and parents. The banquet celebrates a smorgasbord of success stories that leave an audience of approximately 375 participants inspired, spellbound and invested in the children's future.
- The Fred Saigh Youth Leadership Program completed its fifth year with 17 high school students from 13 St. Louis County school districts. The year-long curriculum prepares students for leadership roles in their respective schools and communities through introduction to community involvement. The Leadership Graduation in May demonstrated their personal growth and their readiness for leadership.
- The second Parent Leadership Institute was held on three Saturdays in September, October and November. In two years, the program has dramatically increased parent involvement and provided the tools for parents to develop leadership roles in their respective school districts.
- The awarding of scholarships to college-bound students provided a generous start for students.
- The financial assistance given to countless students for summer camp opportunities, recreational camps and after-school fine arts programs and activities allowed students to build friendships, enhance social skills and excel in newfound skills. Many students performed in musicals and dance productions through the Foundation's partnership with Stages St. Louis.
- The commitment of the teachers who were awarded Dana Brown Mini-Grants for innovative classroom projects to enhance student success was reflected at the fourth annual Dana Brown Teacher Mini-Grant Reception. The event demonstrates the efforts and dedication of the teachers, while at the same time stimulating new instructional ideas for their professional colleagues.
- The annual Dianne Arbeiter Celebration of Success enjoyed another successful year. The Arbeiter family and the Special School District (SSD) staff who raise funds to enable children and youth who are deaf and hard of hearing to attend camps and receive scholarships deserve commendation and praise.
- The SSD Special Olympics received continued Foundation financial support that provides needed equipment, uniforms and other items for children who proudly participate in this program.
- The Foundation's second year in its partnership with Rebecca and Louis Goldman to establish the "Living Big" Campership Award in memory of the Goldman's son, Sammy, produced several applicants. This campership, awarded at the annual Commitment to Kids Banquet, was presented to a child who personified the personality of Sammy Goldman and is a tribute to Sammy's wonderful, but short life.
- The Foundation held a successful event at F.O.B. Saint Louis, Inc. that generated increased funding for the Foundation's provision of hearing aids for children who are deaf and hard of hearing. The event initiated the formation of the SEF Women's Group.
- The Irene Orlando Fund for Children with Autism was formed. The fund was established in tribute to Irene Orlando who passed away in early 2009. Irene dedicated her profession career to helping children with autism. Numerous gifts were donated in Irene's name. A fundraiser was held in June to celebrate her life of dedication and commitment and as a tribute to her many accomplishments in her professional field. The fund will provide services for children with autism.
Once again as we reflect on the past year and look to the future, we express our sincere appreciation and gratitude for the generosity of corporations, foundations and individuals who believe in our mission and who work with us to create a community that aspires for success and independence for all its citizens.
Sincerely,

Diane Buhr
