SPECIAL EDUCATION FOUNDATION HOSTS “CELEBRATION OF SUCCESS”

12/10/2006

Foundation sponsors sixth annual event to honor former SSD Administrator

Honoring the life of one who contributed to the success of countless children who are deaf and hard of hearing is the focus of the Special Education Foundation’s sixth annual “Dianne Arbeiter: A Celebration of Success” benefit to be held at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 14. The event, which also raises funds for scholarships, mini-deaf Olympics, summer camps and hearing aids, will be held at the home of Ronald and Diane Keller at 47 Berkshire in Richmond Heights.

“This evening is a wonderful tribute to Dianne Arbeiter who dedicated her career to making a difference in the lives of children”, stated Gene McNary, Foundation Board President. “The fact that we continue to honor Dianne six years after her death is a strong endorsement of her dedication and commitment to these students. This is a well-deserved tribute to her life!”

The event’s festivities include piano music by 17 year-old Jeff Potter, a student who is hard of hearing. Added to Jeff’s talents are those of the many students who will sign holiday songs. A raffle and door prizes give more merriment to the evening.

Dianne Arbeiter, who dedicated her life to students who are deaf and hard-of-hearing, passed away in June 2001 of a rare form of leukemia. Abeiter initiated many of the programs and played a major role in the Special School District’s early childhood program for three- and four-year old deaf students. Upon her death, teachers, parents and the Special Education Foundation started the Dianne Arbeiter Fund.

Since the fund’s inception in October 2001, the Special Education Foundation, through the Arbeiter fund, has provided 14 college scholarships, sent more than 100 students to the mini-deaf Olympics and summer camps and provided $20,000 in hearing aids. Scholarships are presented to college-bound students at the Foundation’s annual “Commitment to Kids” student recognition banquet held in April of each year.

The Special Education Foundation is a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) organization that is dedicated to assisting students with disabilities in their endeavors beyond the classroom. The Foundation does this through scholarships, camperships, teacher mini-grants for innovative classroom projects, specialized equipment not funded through the District, leadership programs, and public recognition for achievements and accomplishments. The Foundation relies solely on private donations for support and receives no funds from the United Way, tax revenues or the Special School District.
