FOUNDATION RAISES $14,000 TO BENEFIT DEAF AND HEAR-OF HEARING
12/13/2004
Foundation sponsors fourth annual event to honor former SSD Administrator and raises $14,000 for students in deaf and hard-of-hearing programs
The dedication and commitment of Dianne Arbeiter’s life was evidenced by more than 60 parents, teachers and students who gathered for the fourth consecutive year to give tribute to her memory on Wednesday, December 4, at the Richmond Heights home of Eugene and Linda Fahrenkrog. The benefit, “A Tribute to Dianne Arbeiter: A Celebration of Success” honors Arbeiter who directed the Special School District’s Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing Program for 25 years. The special occasion generated more than $14,000 that will provide scholarships, camperships and hearing aids for students served in the Special School District’s Deaf and Hard of Hearing Programs.
“This is a wonderful tribute to one who dedicated her career to making a difference in the lives of children”, stated Gene McNary, Foundation Board President. “The fact that we continue to honor Dianne four years after her death is such a strong endorsement of her dedication and commitment to these students. What a wonderful tribute to her life!”
The festivity was enhanced by 15 year-old Jeff Potter, a ninth grade student at CBC High School in Town and Country and formerly in the SSD deaf and hard of hearing program, who played the piano for those attending. His second CD, Sounds of the Holidays, was so well received that those attending purchased 50 CDs. The major portion of the profit goes to the Foundation’s Arbeiter Fund to benefit students who are deaf or hard-of-hearing. Added to Jeff’s talents were those of the many students who signed holiday songs. A raffle and door prizes added to the merriment.
Dianne Arbeiter, who dedicated her life to students who are deaf and hard-of-hearing, passed away in June 2001 of a rare form of leukemia. Abeiter initiated many of the programs and played a major role in the Special School District’s early childhood program for three- and four-year old deaf students. Upon her death, teachers, parents and the Special Education Foundation started the Dianne Arbeiter Scholarship Fund to honor her memory and her 25-year career.
Since the fund’s inception in October 2001, the Special Education Foundation, through the Arbeiter fund, has provided twelve college scholarships, sent more than 70 students to the mini-deaf Olympics and summer camps and awarded additional camperships to numerous students. Funds also have been used to provide hearing aids and other needed items to enhance educational efforts. Scholarships are presented to college-bound students at the Foundation’s annual “Commitment to Kids” student recognition banquet held each April.
The Special Education Foundation is a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) organization that is dedicated to assisting students with disabilities in their endeavors beyond the classroom. The Foundation does this through scholarships, camperships, teacher mini-grants for innovative classroom projects, specialized equipment not funded through the District, leadership programs, and public recognition for achievements and accomplishments. The Foundation relies solely on private donations for support and receives no funds from the United Way, tax revenues or the Special School District.
