PROGRAMS
Our programs are designed to enhance student success in many ways: by building self-esteem, by developing leadership; by rewarding achievement; by giving teachers the tools to implement innovative approaches; and by fostering parenting skills.

Teachers of children with disabilities have the best insight into methods that succeed in helping children learn. Examples are puppetry to express emotions and photography to model behavior; mechanisms to

build responsible completion of assignments; and cooking to learn basic living skills. Often funds are not available from regulated tax dollars to support enhanced programs, and teachers find themselves trying to purchase materials themselves or foregoing programs that are too costly. Special Education Foundation has stepped in since 1992 to help where tax dollars stop. In 2010, with a grant from the Dana Brown Charitable Trust, we supported 79 programs with $62,000.00. In addition, $11,000 in mini-grants were funded by the Irene Orlando Fund for Children with Autism.

Programs that are innovative and can be duplicated in additional venues are favored in the screening process. Books and equipment that should be available through public funds are not funded, nor are transportation and staff development. Teachers report results the following year to the Foundation board of directors.

The deadline for this program application is January 31, 2011.

Our students have shown improvements in several areas since we began this project. –Ann Watts, Teacher

Special School District music teacher Paula Berner and students enjoy the piano that the Foundation funded as a teacher mini-grant.
District teacher Vicky Nelson and students read from Litz Read materials funded as a teacher mini-grant.
A mini-grant funded a small grocery store to teach children about purchases and making change.
Students in the SSD transition program made pillows and donated them to kids in the Glennon Care unit at DePaul Hospital. Funded by a mini-grant, this project helped students experience the joy of giving.
