  Fred Saigh Parent Leadership Institute
OPENING DOORS TO OPPORTUNITY:
PARENTS AND SCHOOLS WORKING TOGETHER


The Special Education Foundation is sponsoring the 2010 Fred Saigh Parent Leadership Institute in collaboration with SSD Parent Education and Diversity Awareness, and Maryville University. The program to be held at Maryville University's Student Center, from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on September 11, October 2 and November 6.

This leadership training will teach parents and guardians of children with disabilities how to:

Effectively participate in a child's education and improve the educational climate for all children.
Be a part of and conduct productive meetings.
Positively interact and collaborate with other parents and school officials.
Identify resources and network with other parents, school officials, and community leaders.

Training is provided at no cost; however, participants must commit to:

Attend each of the three Parent Leadership Institute sessions.
Attend one fall meeting of the Special School District Inter-District Parent Advisory Council (I-PAC) or other parent advisory group.
Provide service leadership within their school district and/or community.
Identify and develop a project that could benefit their school community.

Kathie Snow, a dynamic nationally known speaker and author of Disability Is Natural, will present at the August 25 kick-off session.

One parent from each St. Louis County school district will be chosen through an application process. Transportation and respite care will not be provided, but referrals to resources are available.
