Every day, across the Special School District and its partner districts, there are individuals quietly changing lives—one student, one family, one moment at a time. The Starfish Awards, powered by the Special Education Foundation’s Women Leaders, were created to recognize these extraordinary people who prove that even the smallest act of care can create a ripple effect of lasting impact.
Inspired by the idea that “you can make a difference to that one,” the Starfish Awards shine a light on educators, staff, and community members who go above and beyond to support students with disabilities. These are the people who stay a little longer, listen a little deeper, and believe a little harder—helping students reach milestones that once felt out of reach.
This special evening is more than just a celebration—it’s a chance to come together as a community and honor the compassion, dedication, and heart that make meaningful change possible.
Jessica Klimpel of the Wester Groves School District is one of our honorees this year. Here is what was said about her:
“Ms. Klimpel has been an amazing addition to the school since she joined a few years ago. She is thoughtful, always finding creative ways to meet the needs of my child, and approaches every situation with optimism and partnership.”
Another Starfish Awardee we will celebrate is Amanda Schroer, Special Education Teacher of the Hancock Place School District. Here is what was said about her:
“Amanda teaches students who have social-emotional needs. She consistently goes above and beyond to ensure that every student feels valued, supported, and capable of success. Her students know that they are safe, and they use the strategies taught to help them regain regulation. The behaviors in her classroom have decreased tremendously since the beginning of the school year. You can see the pride in her students every day.”
