Principal Grants Empower Students Through Innovation and Support

Through the generosity and dedication of the Special Education Foundation Women Leaders, the Principal Grants program continues to create meaningful opportunities for students served by the Special School District of St. Louis County. These grants help bring innovative, student-centered ideas to life in SSD classrooms, providing resources and experiences that go beyond traditional funding and helping students with disabilities thrive academically, socially, and emotionally.

The Women Leaders Principal Grants are designed to support the Special School District’s (SSD) 7 school locations, which include Bridges and Summit Academy (formerly known as the Juvenile Detention Center. These special projects, presented by the SSD School Principals each September, enrich learning while fostering confidence, independence, and personal growth. By funding creative programs and unique classroom experiences, the grants ensure students have access to tools and opportunities that help them succeed both inside and outside the classroom.

Lizsinger Principal Julie Moorman created a Sensory Hammock Reading Garden for the students at her school. Located in the central courtyard, the space is available to students of all levels for reading and relaxation.

Summit Academy Principal Ann Hawkey and her staff over the last 2 years have created branding for the naming of their school, which was established in October, 2025. Formerly known as the Juvenile Detention Center, T-shirts, rugs, and other items highlight the name and space within the school.

Because of the continued commitment of Women Leaders, these grants are doing far more than funding projects. See more of the Principal Grants this group has helped support. They are opening doors, expanding opportunities, and helping students reach their full potential. Their support continues to make a lasting difference in the lives of students with disabilities throughout the SSD community.
