For more than a decade, the Fred Saigh Leadership Academy has empowered high school students with disabilities to grow into confident, capable leaders. Through advocacy training, public speaking, and project management, graduates have gone on to become leaders in their schools and communities.
Building on that proven success, the Special Education Foundation is proud to launch a new pilot initiative: the Junior Leaders Academy, designed specifically for middle school students with disabilities.
Middle school is a pivotal time—when self-discovery, independence, and self-advocacy begin to take shape. By reaching students earlier, the Junior Leadership Academy helps participants:
- Build self-confidence and independence
- Strengthen communication and teamwork skills
- Learn creative problem-solving strategies
- Navigate academic and social challenges
- Develop a strong sense of belonging and community
During the 2026–2027 school year, selected students will participate in three interactive sessions, including visits to local businesses, hands-on workshops, and collaborative projects that encourage personal growth and leadership development.
Who Should Apply?
The Junior Leadership Academy is open to:
- Middle school students (grades 6–8) served by the Special School District of St. Louis County
- Students with disabilities who are eager to:
- Build confidence and self-advocacy skills
- Collaborate with peers on meaningful projects
- Learn leadership skills they can apply in school and life
Up to 10 students will be selected to participate in this pilot program. Educators and students will complete the application together. For more information and to apply, visit our website. Submit your application by February 28, 2026.
