Each year, the Special Education Foundation (SEF) is proud to support graduating students with disabilities as they take the next step in their educational journeys. Through SEF’s Scholarship program, students receive financial assistance toward post-secondary education while honoring the legacies of individuals who dedicated their lives to education, leadership, and service.

About the Scholarships

John Cary Scholarship, Presented by Emerson
Established in 2016, the $5,000 John Cary Scholarship honors the late superintendent of the Special School District of St. Louis County. John Cary was known for his unwavering commitment to excellence and tireless advocacy for students with disabilities. Scholarship recipients reflect the qualities he most admired—resiliency, courage, and determination—and often demonstrate perseverance in overcoming obstacles. Financial need and teacher recommendations are also considered.

Jane Vickrey Leadership Scholarship
Established in 2025 in loving remembrance of Jane Vickrey, this $5,000 scholarship celebrates her deep belief in giving back to the community. Following her retirement, Jane served as secretary of SEF’s Board of Directors and was the Board liaison to the Fred Saigh Leadership Program, participating monthly in leadership activities. This scholarship is awarded annually to a student who has completed the Fred Saigh Leadership Academy and reflects Jane’s defining qualities: kindness, compassion, courtesy, and a hands-on commitment to doing good work. Financial need is also considered.

Christopher Davis Scholarship
The $2,500 Christopher Davis Scholarship, generously provided by the Ronald Davis family, is awarded to a deserving student from the Ritenour School District. Established in 2005 in memory of Christopher Davis, a proud Ritenour alumnus, this scholarship honors his legacy by supporting students as they pursue their academic goals.

Special Eligibility Note

Graduates of the Fred Saigh Leadership Academy are eligible to apply for both the John Cary Scholarship AND the Jane Vickrey Leadership Scholarship.

Scholarship Criteria

SEF scholarships are awarded to selected graduating students who receive services from the Special School District of St. Louis County, including special education and/or technical education. Scholarships may be used for tuition only and support students pursuing post-secondary education at a community college, university, trade school, or certification program.

By investing in these students, SEF continues its commitment to expanding opportunities and empowering young people to achieve their goals.

Applications for SEF’s scholarships are now open, with a deadline of January 30, 2026.
