Women Leaders—Passion in Action for Students with Disabilities

United by a shared commitment to make a meaningful difference, the Special Education Foundation’s Women Leaders are a dynamic group of passionate women dedicated to supporting children and youth with disabilities served by the Special School District of St. Louis County (SSD).

Established in 2009 following a friend-raiser event, the Women Leaders were formed in response to a simple but powerful question: How can we help? Since then, the group has become a vital source of support for SSD students by funding special school projects identified by SSD principals—projects that directly enhance learning experiences, independence, and opportunity for students with disabilities.

Principal Grants

Each September, the Women Leaders and Special Education Foundation staff meet with principals from Special School District schools—including Summit Academy (formerly the Juvenile Detention Center) and the Bridges Program—to learn directly about their students’ needs and the special projects that would make the greatest impact. Through these conversations and the Principal Grants program, principals partner with the Women Leaders to bring meaningful, student-centered ideas to life.

For the 2025–2026 school year, the Women Leaders approved $12,182 in funding to support innovative projects across SSD schools. Funded initiatives include the creation of sensory and calming spaces, inclusive literacy environments, accessible recreational equipment, student celebrations, and outdoor play enhancements—each designed to promote engagement, regulation, and positive school experiences for students with disabilities.

Starfish Awards

In addition to funding school-based projects, the Women Leaders proudly support the Starfish Awards. This program celebrates individuals across SSD who go above and beyond in service to students with disabilities. These honorees—educators, staff, and champions within the SSD community—embody compassion, dedication, and impact. The Women Leaders are excited to announce the upcoming Starfish Award recipients in the coming weeks, shining a light on those whose everyday actions create extraordinary outcomes for students.

Together, the Women Leaders continue to invest in both innovative programs and exceptional people, ensuring students with disabilities receive the support, encouragement, and opportunities they deserve.

If you—or someone you know—is passionate about making a lasting impact in the lives of children and youth with disabilities, we invite you to join the Women Leaders. To learn more, contact info@sef-stl.org or call (314) 394-7030.

Together, we are creating change—one student, one school, and one starfish at a time.
