Junior Leaders Academy - New Pilot Program for 2026-2027
For more than a decade, the Fred Saigh Leadership Academy has empowered high school students with disabilities to develop into confident, capable leaders. Through a focus on self-advocacy, public speaking, teamwork, and project management, participants gain real-world skills that prepare them to lead in their schools, workplaces, and communities.
Building on the success of the proven model, the Special Education Foundation is proud to launch a new pilot initiative—the Junior Leaders Academy, designed specifically for incoming 6th–8th grade students.
Middle school is a pivotal stage of development. It’s when students begin to explore who they are, develop independence, and find their voice. The Junior Leaders Academy meets students at this critical moment, introducing leadership concepts in an age-appropriate, supportive, and engaging way.
The Junior Leaders Academy will guide students through three interactive sessions held between August and November. Transportation will be provided, allowing students to visit key locations throughout the community. These off-campus experiences help students connect classroom learning to the real world while building emerging leadership skills and include hands-on activities, group discussions, and collaborative projects.
Who Should Apply?
The Junior Leaders Academy is open to:
- Middle school students in grades 6–8 served by the Special School District of St. Louis County
- Students with disabilities who are eager to:
- Build confidence and self-advocacy skills
- Collaborate with peers on meaningful projects
- Learn leadership skills they can apply in school and in life
Up to 10 students will be selected for this pilot program. Applications are being accepted through February 28, 2026.
