The Special Education Foundation is excited to announce that the Junior Leaders Academy—our new pilot program for incoming 6th–8th grade students—is accepting applications through Friday, March 13! Middle school is a pivotal time when students begin to explore who they are, develop independence, and find their voice. This program is designed to meet students at this important stage, introducing leadership concepts in a supportive, engaging, and age-appropriate way.
What Is the Junior Leaders Academy?
Building on the success of the Fred Saigh Leadership Academy for high school students, the Junior Leaders Academy empowers middle school students with disabilities to grow as confident, capable leaders. Participants will focus on:
- Self-advocacy
- Teamwork and collaboration
- Project planning and social skills
- Communication and leadership skills
The program includes three interactive sessions held between August and November. Transportation will be provided for students who need it to travel to and from the SSD Central Office, and to key community locations for hands-on activities, group discussions, and collaborative projects. These experiences help students connect classroom learning to the real world while building essential leadership skills.
Don’t Miss Your Chance!
The application deadline has been extended to Friday, March 13—so there’s still time to apply! We encourage families, teachers, and school leaders to share this opportunity with students who would benefit from this engaging leadership experience.
Up to 10 students will be selected for this pilot program. Apply today and help your child take the first step toward becoming a confident, capable leader!
