For students with disabilities, adaptive equipment can be life-changing. From communication devices and mobility supports to specialized technology that fosters independence, these tools open doors to learning, connection, and confidence. But what happens when a student’s time in the classroom comes to an end?
As students served by the Special School District (SSD) transition out of school and into adulthood, the need for these essential supports does not disappear. In fact, for many, adaptive equipment becomes even more critical as they navigate life beyond the structured environment of school—pursuing employment, building relationships, and gaining independence in their communities.
That’s where we step in.
Thanks to a generous grant from The Tilles Foundation, our Adaptive & Assistive Equipment program is designed to ensure that students aging out of SSD continue to have access to the tools they rely on every day. Whether it’s a communication device that gives someone their voice, a sensory support that helps regulate daily life, or mobility equipment that enables freedom and access, we are committed to helping bridge the gap between school and adulthood.
The application process begins with teachers, who identify and recommend students for consideration. Financial need plays an important role in determining funding decisions, ensuring support reaches those who need it most.
Through this program, eligible students have the opportunity to receive funding support to retain and own the adaptive equipment that has been essential to their success in the classroom—so it can continue to support them in the next chapter of their lives.
