Women Leaders—Empowering Principals & Educators Through Grants & Starfish Awards

Behind many of the experiences happening in Special School District (SSD) schools is a dedicated group of women working quietly—but powerfully—to make a difference. The Special Education Foundation’s Women Leaders continue to create lasting impact through the Principal Grants program, while also organizing the inspiring Starfish Awards, an event that supports these efforts each year.

Each September, Women Leaders join SEF staff in meeting with principals from SSD schools, including the Bridges Program and Summit Academy. During these conversations, principals share their students' unique needs and propose creative ideas for special projects that enhance learning and independence. With the support of Women Leaders, these ideas become a reality.

For the 2025–2026 school year, an incredible $12,182 in funding was approved to bring these projects to life. For one, Ackerman Principal Jenna Heinlein and Assistant Principal Carrie Page created an "Ackerdome" sensory space in their school. Equipped with Sensie seats, sensory socks, a canoe, a squeeze machine, and vibrating tubes, this project allows students to access this area outside of their instructional area when needed.

These projects share a common purpose: to create opportunities for students with disabilities to thrive, connect, and build independence.

The ability to fund these impactful initiatives is made possible in large part by the Starfish Awards, an annual event planned and led by the Women Leaders. This special celebration honors individuals who make a meaningful difference in the lives of students with disabilities—those who, like the starfish story suggests, change the world one act of kindness at a time. Proceeds from the Starfish Awards directly support the Principal Grants program, turning recognition into real, tangible support for students and schools.

Since forming in 2009, the Women Leaders have remained committed to uplifting students through innovative fundraising—from fashion shows to community campaigns such as Give STL Day. Their passion continues to translate into opportunities that might not otherwise be possible.
