Bringing the Joy of the Arts to SSD Classrooms

The Special Education Foundation’s (SEF) Arts in the Classroom program brings the arts directly into Special School District (SSD) classrooms—creating moments of joy, creativity, and connection for students of all abilities. Thanks to the generous support of the Regional Arts Commission of St. Louis and the Ken & Pat Schutte family, students at the SSD schools have seen a variety of magical performances this school year. Performances include The Metro Theater Company, The Black Rep, Afriki Lolo, the Rep’s Imaginary Theatre Company, and Opera on the Go!

This April, Northview and Neuwoehner schools will experience something truly unforgettable: a live performance by members of the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra (SLSO). The SLSO will transform a typical school day into an interactive musical adventure. During their performance, students won’t just listen to music—they’ll become part of the story. Together, students will step into the role of heroes on a mission to bring music back to the world, exploring sounds, solving fun challenges, and unlocking the magic of music along the way. It’s an engaging, hands-on experience designed to spark imagination and make music accessible to every student in the room.

Performances like these go far beyond entertainment—they play a vital role in supporting students with disabilities. Exposure to the arts has been shown to enhance communication skills, improve focus, and build confidence. Music, in particular, can help students express themselves in ways that words sometimes cannot, offering an inclusive and welcoming space where every child can participate and succeed. For many students, these performances also provide meaningful sensory experiences and opportunities for social connection with their peers.

SEF is honored to partner with organizations and families who believe in the importance of bringing enriching opportunities like this to the students. Together, we are ensuring that every child—regardless of ability—has access to experiences that inspire, uplift, and empower.
