The Special Education Foundation’s (SEF) Autism Independence Project is continuing to make a meaningful impact in the lives of students with autism—and there’s still time to participate this spring. With a few spots remaining in upcoming cohorts, now is an excellent opportunity for students and families to take advantage of this innovative, evidence-based program designed to build confidence, connection, and independence.
At the heart of the Autism Independence Project is iSocial, a structured, remote group intervention developed by researchers at the Thompson Center for Autism and Neurodevelopment. This program focuses on strengthening social competence in individuals with autism through guided practice, real-time feedback, and peer interaction—all in a supportive virtual setting.
Building Skills That Last a Lifetime
Participants in the program engage in weekly sessions led by trained facilitators, where they learn and practice essential social skills such as:
Initiating and maintaining conversations
Understanding social cues and perspectives
Developing and sustaining friendships
Navigating real-world social situations
What makes this program especially impactful is its interactive format. Students don’t just learn concepts—they actively apply them in real-time with peers, helping to build confidence and reinforce skills in a meaningful way.
“My son was greatly rewarded by the time, attention, and especially the detailed instruction to enhance his social skills now and into the future. The instruction was detailed and specific to his lifestyle and development. The other students in the class were equally as interesting, and the class was enjoyable for him. He hopes for another opportunity if it ever comes up. Thank you for the great experience!” ~Satisfied Mom
