The Special Education Foundation’s Kid-to-Camp program provides students served by the Special School District of St. Louis County (SSD) with enriching camp experiences during academic breaks. Beyond the fun and adventure, this program offers something even more meaningful: an opportunity for growth, connection, and a much-needed moment of rest and renewal for families.
More Than Just Camp—A Pathway to Growth
While camp is certainly fun, it’s meaningful in more ways. For students with disabilities, these experiences provide opportunities to build friendships, practice social skills, and feel a true sense of belonging. In structured, supportive environments, students gain confidence as they try new activities, make choices, and develop independence.
Camps also play a critical role in maintaining progress between school sessions. By staying engaged during breaks, students continue to build social and emotional skills, helping prevent regression and ensuring they return to school ready to thrive.
Supporting the Whole Family
The benefits of Kid-to-Camp extend beyond the child. For families, it offers peace of mind, a chance to recharge, and the reassurance that their child is in a safe, engaging, and supportive environment. It’s not just a program—it’s an investment in the well-being of the entire family.
Opening Doors to Opportunity
The Kid-to-Camp program provides financial assistance, or “camperships,” to help students attend day or overnight camps during summer break and other school-year breaks. These camps offer a blend of social, educational, and recreational experiences designed to meet each child's unique needs.
Applications are being accepted for summer camp. Families may apply once per calendar year, with awards based on financial need and the potential benefit to the student. Learn more about our Kid-to-Camp Policy’s eligibility and request limits
