Fred Saigh Leadership Academy— Empowering Students to Lead

For more than two decades, the Fred Saigh Leadership Academy has been transforming the lives of high school students with disabilities—helping them discover their voice, build confidence, and step into leadership roles within their schools and communities. Through this year-long program, students gain far more than knowledge—they gain experiences that shape their future.

Designed as a hands-on leadership journey, the Academy selects students from across St. Louis County and immerses them in real-world learning beyond the classroom. Each month, participants step into the community, visiting key institutions, meeting local leaders, and exploring the systems that shape everyday life.

Real-World Experiences That Inspire Growth

Throughout the year, students have the opportunity to visit and engage with a variety of impactful locations and organizations. Past experiences have included visits to government offices, the Missouri State Capitol in Jefferson City, local media outlets, the Missouri Botanical Garden, and community organizations like the Little Bit Foundation.

Celebrating the Class of 2026

The leadership class’s journey ends with a graduation ceremony where students reflect on their experiences and share how the program has impacted their lives. This year’s Fred Saigh Leadership Academy graduation will take place on May 6, celebrating the achievements and growth of the Class of 2026 as they complete this transformative leadership experience.

As one class prepares to graduate, excitement is already building for what’s next. The 2026-2027 Fred Saigh Leadership Academy class will be announced in June, welcoming another group of students ready to grow, lead, and make a difference.

Through programs like the Fred Saigh Leadership Academy, the Special Education Foundation continues to empower students with disabilities—helping them build the skills, confidence, and experiences they need to succeed not only in school, but in life.
