Building Independence Through Connection—Summer Cohorts Forming Now

The Special Education Foundation continues its commitment to empowering students with disabilities through the Autism Independence Project, developed in partnership with iSocial. Rooted in the Foundation’s mission to increase independence, this innovative program helps students strengthen social skills while expanding their confidence, relationships, and future aspirations.

At the heart of the program is iSocial’s Remote Group Therapy for Social Competence, a research-backed model created by Dr. Janine Stichter and the Thompson Center for Autism.

Supported by multiple university studies, this evidence-based approach has been proven effective in helping individuals with autism build meaningful social connections and develop critical life skills needed for independence.

The program is designed for middle and high school students who are identified by educators and families as strong candidates for growth in social communication. Participants meet in small groups of six peers for 32 one-hour evening sessions over the course of 16 weeks. Led by licensed professionals, each session is highly interactive, incorporating role-play, guided discussions, and engaging activities that make learning both practical and enjoyable.

“My daughter is 17 years old, and while very verbal at home, she has extreme difficulty in social settings. She often answers by repeating what someone else says or by giving single-word answers. She often wants to communicate through written communication instead of speaking. This program is helping her to be more effective in her verbal communication skills.”

Summer cohorts are forming now, offering a valuable opportunity for students to build connections and skills in a supportive, structured environment.
