For more than two decades, the Special Education Foundation (SEF) has helped turn creative classroom ideas into meaningful learning experiences through its Classroom Innovation Grants program. We are excited to announce next year’s grant recipients. We are once again inspired by the dedication, passion, and innovation of teachers serving students with disabilities across the Special School District.
Teachers of children with disabilities understand better than anyone what their students need to succeed. They see opportunities to create hands-on learning experiences, adaptive tools, sensory supports, communication resources, and life-skills programs that can make a lasting impact. Yet many of these ideas fall outside the limits of traditional school funding. That is where the Special Education Foundation steps in—bridging the gap where tax dollars fall short.
The need for programs like Classroom Innovation Grants continues to grow. According to national education surveys, teachers spend an average of hundreds of dollars each year out of their own pockets on classroom supplies and student resources. Missouri teachers consistently report out-of-pocket spending that exceeds the national average, with special education teachers often investing even more to meet the individualized needs of their students. From sensory materials and adaptive technology to flexible seating and vocational training tools, educators frequently purchase items themselves to ensure their students have every opportunity to succeed.
One teacher used grant funding to create a calming sensory room that gave students a safe place to regroup and return ready to learn. Another introduced adaptive cooking and nutrition lessons that allowed students to practice real-world skills while building independence. Other educators have developed classroom gardens, music therapy opportunities, STEM exploration projects, and community-based learning experiences that encourage collaboration and self-confidence.

See the 2026-2027 Classroom Innovation Grant recipients here. We received 104 grant applications totaling more than $118,000 in requested support—each proposal representing a teacher’s passion for helping students learn, grow, and succeed in meaningful ways.
While we wish we could support every single request, limited funding necessitated difficult decisions. Thanks to the generosity of our donors and community supporters, SEF is proud to award $60,000 in grants to 88 innovative classroom projects for the upcoming school year. Although not every application could be fully funded, each submission reflected the incredible dedication educators bring to their students every day.
We celebrate the educators who continue to dream big for their students. Their creativity, compassion, and dedication remind us that innovation in education can transform lives—and with community support, even the most imaginative ideas can become reality.
