Supporting Ourselves as We Support Students – A Memorial Day Reflection

stacked rocks on ocean background

As we head towards Memorial Day weekend next week, we are reminded of the importance of reflection, gratitude, and care—for ourselves and for the communities we serve. In Special Education, every day is centered on meeting students where they are, supporting their individual needs, and helping them grow in confidence, independence, and connection.

In the midst of busy school schedules, family responsibilities, and constant demands on our time and attention, it can be easy to put personal well-being last. Yet, sustaining the heart of our work begins with caring for ourselves. Taking even small moments to reset, reflect, and recharge helps us continue showing up fully for our students and each other.

Wellness in this work is holistic—it includes physical rest, emotional balance, mental clarity, and a sense of purpose. As we head towards the long weekend, it’s a meaningful opportunity to pause and consider simple ways to restore that balance:

Prioritize rest.
Consistent sleep and true downtime allow your body and mind to recover. Even a short break from routine can help restore energy and focus.

Nourish yourself well.
Taking time for balanced meals and hydration supports the stamina needed for the important work of supporting students with diverse needs.

Move in simple ways.
A walk, stretching, or a few quiet moments outside can help release stress and bring clarity during demanding days.

Reflect and reset.
Whether through journaling, prayer, or quiet reflection, taking time to process your thoughts can help you stay grounded in purpose.

Be present in the moment.
Even brief pauses to breathe and refocus can create space for calm, patience, and perspective in both personal and professional life.

As we honor this Memorial Weekend, we also recognize the value of service, care, and community. May this weekend offer time to rest, reflect, and reconnect—so we can continue our mission of supporting students with strength, compassion, and intention in the days ahead.
