As we close out another incredible school year, we want to extend our heartfelt gratitude for your unwavering dedication to your students. The impact you make each day is profound, and as summer begins, we’re asking for your continued partnership in extending that impact beyond the classroom.
The Special Education Foundation (SEF) exists solely to support you and the remarkable students of the Special School District (SSD) through programs that empower, enrich, and inspire.
One of our most impactful initiatives, the Classroom Innovation Grants, brings your most creative teaching ideas to life—funding everything from flexible seating and sensory spaces to meaningful classroom experiences and special projects. These grants are made possible entirely through private donations.
Tracy Kroenlein of Lindbergh's Early Childhood Center, who used her Classroom Innovation Grant as an interactive experience focused on exploring and tasting a variety of fresh fruits in 4 of her Early Child Special Education Classrooms. For many students, particularly those on the Autism Spectrum Disorder, trying new foods can be challenging. However, introducing new experiences is essential for promoting healthy eating habits and building adaptability.
“Many of our students with disabilities experience sensory sensitivities, oral-motor delays, or limited food exposure, which significantly impacts their willingness to try new foods. As a result, students have limited opportunities to explore fresh fruits and vegetables in a structured, supportive environment. This program was created to provide a safe, low-pressure space for students to explore and become more comfortable with new, healthy, fresh foods. The goal is not immediate consumption, but increased tolerance, interaction, and eventual acceptance of a wider variety of nutritious foods.”
Summer is also a critical time for students to continue building confidence, independence, and social skills. A $250 donation sends one student to camp—providing a joyful, skill-building experience filled with friendship, growth, and connection that lasts well beyond the summer months. Every gift matters, and contributions of $25, $50, or $100 make a meaningful difference as camp costs continue to rise and more students need support when school is out.
We understand how busy this time of year can be, but we also know your commitment to students doesn’t stop when the school year ends. If you are able, please consider making a gift of any amount to the Special Education Foundation today. Every dollar helps us invest in brighter, more inclusive futures for the students we serve together.
Thank you for being the heart of SEF and SSD, and for standing with us in strengthening the lives of children with disabilities—today, this summer, and into the future.
