The Special Education Foundation’s Fred Saigh Leadership Academy is kicking off another exciting year of leadership development, bringing together a new class of students ready to learn, grow, and explore what it means to be a leader.
Led by Coordinator Matt Moellering, students will participate in engaging sessions and unique experiences throughout the year designed to strengthen their leadership skills, build confidence, and introduce them to leaders and organizations throughout the St. Louis community.
Last week kicked off with a Getting Acquainted meeting on Saturday, August 22nd. Adding inspiration to the new program year, Academy alumnus and C.J. Aubuchon Award recipient Mario Holmes returned to speak with this year’s class.
Mario, who attends Valley Park & North Tech High Schools, shared his experiences as a participant in the Fred Saigh Leadership Academy and reflected on the ways the program helped shape his leadership journey. His return allowed students to hear directly from someone who has experienced the Academy and carried its lessons forward.
Special Education Foundation Executive Director Tim Eby welcomed the new Fred Saigh Leadership Academy class by sharing words of wisdom and encouragement as students begin their leadership journey. He spoke about the importance of taking advantage of new opportunities, learning from others, and believing in their ability to make a positive impact. His inspiring message set the tone for the year ahead and encouraged students to grow as leaders both within the Academy and in their schools and communities.
Rhett Hickerson then led the students in a fun and engaging team-bonding event designed to strengthen relationships, build trust, and encourage collaboration. Through shared activities and meaningful conversations, students had the opportunity to get to know one another beyond the classroom while developing the communication and teamwork skills that are essential to effective leadership. The event was a great start to building a strong, supportive team as this year’s Academy participants begin their leadership journey.
Learning What Leadership Means—From the Inside of a Supermarket
The Academy’s first session will take place on Friday, September 11, from 12–2 p.m. The session, themed “What Is Leadership?”, will challenge students to explore the qualities and responsibilities of effective leaders.
Students will also receive a behind-the-scenes tour of Save A Lot, where they will discover what it takes to operate a successful supermarket and learn how the grocery industry generates billions of dollars. The experience will provide a unique look at the many people, decisions, systems, and leadership roles involved in bringing food from suppliers to store shelves and serving customers every day.
Annual Car Wash - September 11, 2026
During the first session, students will also participate in a car wash on September 11 from 12–2 p.m., putting their teamwork and leadership skills into action while supporting the Academy.
Throughout the year, members of the Fred Saigh Leadership Academy will continue to explore new ideas, connect with community leaders, and participate in experiences that help them better understand themselves and their potential as leaders.
