Bring Your Next Big Classroom Idea to Life

Since 2002, the Special Education Foundation (SEF) has supported educators in bringing creative projects to life when traditional school funding doesn't cover the cost. Classroom Innovation Grants are designed for innovative projects that make a meaningful impact on students with disabilities and have the potential to be replicated in other educational settings.

Have an innovative idea that could make a meaningful difference for your students?

SEF is now accepting Classroom Innovation Grant applications for the 2027–2028 school year. Applications are open now through February 26, 2027, giving educators time to develop a project that brings a new idea, resource, or experience to students with disabilities served by the Special School District (SSD).

Teachers know what their students need, but finding funding for creative classroom projects can be a challenge. According to DonorsChoose’ 2026 Teacher Survey, educators reported spending an average of $600 of their own money on classroom supplies and resources. A separate 2025 survey from AdoptAClassroom.org found teachers spent an average of $895 out of pocket during the 2024–2025 school year.

That’s where our Classroom Innovation Grants can help.

Matt Reyes of Ackerman School is a 2025-2026 Classroom Innovation Grant recipient, implementing his project, Explore and Move.

He purchased a curriculum called Outdoor Adventures to support student participation in non-traditional sports and activities.

Katie Crews of Litzsinger School is another 2025-2026 Classroom Innovation Grant recipient.

She implemented her Exact Path project. This project supports students in reading and math and allows them to shop in the school store as they meet their reading and math goals.  What Makes a Strong Project?

Think beyond everyday classroom supplies. We’re looking for ideas that give students new ways to learn, participate, practice skills, explore their interests, or engage with their education.

Before you begin your application, be sure to read SEF’s Helpful Hints for Applying. This resource provides important guidance on what our reviewers will be looking for and can help you clearly explain your project, its impact on students, and why SEF funding is needed.

Projects should be innovative and have the potential to be replicated in other settings. SEF does not fund items that are expected to be covered by public funds, including books and equipment, transportation, or staff development.
