Fred Saigh Leadership Academy Students Put Community Service into Action

What happens when students discover that their ideas matter and their actions can make a difference? For students in the Fred Saigh Leadership Academy, it means building confidence, finding their voices, and learning how to contribute to their communities.

During their recent “Local Government in Action” session, students combined civic education with hands-on experiences. They began with a visit to the St. Louis County Jail inside the George Westfall Criminal Justice Center in Clayton. Students gained a firsthand look at how local government agencies support public safety and rehabilitation. The experience brought classroom concepts to life and encouraged students to ask questions, think critically, and better understand their community.

The morning continued with a visit to the Saigh Foundation, a longtime partner of the Special Education Foundation and supporter of the Fred Saigh Leadership Academy. There, students presented a $675 check, funds raised through their annual Fred Saigh Leadership Car Wash in September. The students chose to donate the proceeds to SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital, turning their hard work into support for children and families.

In the afternoon, students participated in a “Getting Acquainted” activity and a “Facilitating Conversations” activity, helping them build essential leadership skills such as communication, relationship-building, active listening, and collaboration. These activities encouraged students to step outside their comfort zones, learn about one another, share ideas, and practice guiding meaningful conversations. By developing confidence in connecting with others and creating an environment where everyone feels heard and valued, students strengthened skills they can use to lead, work as a team, and make a positive impact in their schools and communities.

The Fred Saigh Leadership Academy helps students with disabilities strengthen their communication and decision-making skills through real-world learning. Experiences like these allow students to recognize their strengths, build independence, and see how much they have to contribute.

This program gives students the opportunity to discover what they’re capable of accomplishing. Through the Academy, students gain meaningful experiences that help them grow in confidence and find new ways to make a difference.
