Every student deserves the opportunity to pursue their dreams after graduation. For students with disabilities, financial support can help turn those dreams into achievable goals, whether that means attending college, learning a trade, or earning a professional certification.

Each year, the Special Education Foundation (SEF) awards scholarships to graduating students who receive services from the Special School District of St. Louis County (SSD). These scholarships provide financial assistance for continuing education while honoring individuals whose lives reflected a commitment to education, leadership, and service.

SEF is looking for its next scholarship recipients! Applications are open now through January 15, 2027. If you know a graduating student who could benefit, encourage them to apply.

SEF Scholarships

John Cary Scholarship, Presented by Emerson

Established in 2016, the $5,000 John Cary Scholarship honors the late superintendent of SSD, who was a passionate advocate for students with disabilities. Recipients reflect the qualities John valued most: resiliency, courage, and determination. The selection process also considers financial need and teacher recommendations.

Jane Vickrey Leadership Scholarship

Established in 2025 in loving memory of Jane Vickrey, this $5,000 scholarship celebrates her dedication to community service and student leadership. After retiring, Jane continued serving SEF as a Board member and liaison to the Fred Saigh Leadership Academy, participating in monthly student activities.

The scholarship recognizes a graduate of the Fred Saigh Leadership Academy who demonstrates Jane's defining qualities: kindness, compassion, courtesy, and a hands-on commitment to doing good work. Financial need is also considered.

Christopher Davis Scholarship

Generously provided by the Ronald Davis family, the $2,500 Christopher Davis Scholarship supports a deserving graduating student from the Ritenour School District. Established in 2005 in memory of Christopher Davis, a proud Ritenour alumnus, the scholarship honors his legacy by helping another student pursue their educational goals.

Who Can Apply?

SEF scholarships are available to selected graduating students who receive special education and/or technical education services through SSD. Funds may be used for tuition only at a community college, university, trade school, or certification program.

A special opportunity for Academy graduates: Students who have completed the Fred Saigh Leadership Academy are eligible to apply for both the John Cary Scholarship and the Jane Vickrey Leadership Scholarship.

Help a Student Take the Next Step - Applying Is Easier Than Ever!

SEF has streamlined the scholarship application process to make it easier for students to apply. Applications are now a one-step process! Students complete and submit their application, then upload a letter of recommendation from a teacher. No separate teacher application is needed.

“This upcoming semester, I will be starting my senior year at Lindenwood University, majoring in Fashion Design & Technology with a minor in Marketing, “ states Constance Anthony, a 2023 scholarship recipient. “Only two semesters left!  The SEF scholarship allowed me to pay for my first year of college fully supported by scholarships, and I am still going strong on being debt-free! After graduation, I plan to stay in the St. Louis area and contribute to the growing fashion scene in whatever way I can as a designer, writer, and marketer.”

The transition from high school to post-secondary education opens the door to new possibilities. SEF scholarships help students take that next step while recognizing the determination, potential, and individual strengths they bring to their futures.

Applications are open now through January 15, 2027. Know a graduating student planning to enroll in post-secondary education? Share this opportunity with them and encourage them to apply!
