As winter settles into St. Louis County, the biting cold becomes more than just uncomfortable—it’s a daily hardship for many families. Too often, parents find themselves facing impossible decisions: should they keep the heat on, pay for groceries, or purchase essentials like a winter coat for their child?
At the Special Education Foundation, in partnership with the Special School District, we recognize another urgent need—ensuring every child, regardless of ability, has a warm, safe coat to weather the season.
That’s why each year, we launch our annual Critical Needs Coat Drive—a lifeline for children with disabilities in our community. This initiative goes beyond simply providing warmth.
For many of the students we serve, standard coats are not an option. Heavy, bulky outerwear often doesn’t work with wheelchairs or other mobility equipment. Seams, tags, and restrictive fits can cause discomfort or even pain for children with sensory processing challenges.
In many cases, only specialized, adaptive coats or medical-grade outerwear will do—yet these come at a price that’s simply out of reach for many families.
A decade ago, a child’s winter coat cost $30. Today, that price has risen to $40–$45 for a standard jacket. But the reality is even more daunting for families seeking adaptive options. Specialized coats can range from $80 to $130, while medical-grade coats can cost $350 to $550 or more.
Donate to the Critical Needs Coat Drive
For families already juggling the demands of medical appointments, therapies, and day-to-day expenses, these costs can be overwhelming.
Every dollar makes a tangible difference.
A $50 donation can provide an adaptive fleece overlay or a sensory-friendly poncho—garments designed specifically for children who can’t tolerate traditional coats. A gift of $125 can fund a mid-tier adaptive coat equipped with features such as magnetic closures, side zippers, or extra-wide sleeves that ensure both warmth and accessibility. Your generosity provides comfort, protection, and, most importantly, the sense of belonging every child deserves.
This winter, your support means more than just providing a coat—it means restoring dignity, comfort, and independence to a child who might otherwise face the cold alone. We invite you to join us in making the season brighter and safer for children with disabilities.
Donate on our website or text “SEFCOATDRIVE” to 50155 and help us reach our $6,000 goal.
Every contribution brings us closer to a community where no child is left out in the cold.
Let’s ensure that every child—regardless of ability—has the warmth, security, and confidence they need to thrive, not just survive, this winter.
