On June 11, the Special Education Foundation (SEF) invites you to an unforgettable evening of inspiration, gratitude, and celebration at The Reverie STL for the 3rd Annual Starfish Awards.
The Starfish Award is one of the Foundation’s most meaningful honors—reserved for individuals whose seemingly small acts of kindness create extraordinary impact. Like the familiar story of the child returning starfish to the ocean one by one, these honorees demonstrate that even the smallest gestures can change a life. Their compassion, dedication, and unwavering support leave a lasting imprint on students and families throughout the Special School District and its 22 partner districts across St. Louis County.
This year, we are proud to recognize outstanding individuals, including paraprofessionals Donald Stanley in the Jennings School District and Debbie Young of Ackerman School. Their commitment to students has made a profound difference. Through their everyday actions—offering encouragement, stability, and care—they embody the true spirit of the Starfish Award. Their efforts, along with those of their fellow honorees, create a ripple effect of positivity that strengthens the entire community.
Donald Stanley exemplifies the spirit of the Starfish Award through his dedication, compassion, and belief that small acts can create lasting impact. His commitment to growth, community service, and inclusive education ensures every student is valued and supported. Through his advocacy and “meet students where they are” approach, he continues to make a meaningful difference in the lives of those he serves.
Debbie Young has devoted more than 40 years to supporting students, families, and educators with unwavering compassion and care. Her empathy, patience, and commitment to inclusion have created a lasting impact, helping students build confidence and independence while fostering a supportive school community. Through her everyday actions, she creates a ripple effect of positivity that inspires all those around her.
